Polished Brass Unlacquered (Internal or External Use)

The Wenlock Polished Brass products are cast from solid brass and have an excellent quality which have been manufactured to the highest standards. The brass finish is unlacquered and will tarnish naturally and therefore would need to be treated with a brass polish to maintain and protect the item. The alternative is over time the brass will acquire a darker, more aged patina if not maintained with polish, this is of course often the desired look anyway. When fixing slotted brass screws, pre-drill and coat the screws with vaseline or candle wax to drive in.

Antique Brass Unlacquered (Internal or External Use)

The Antique Brass finish has been treated to speed up the natural tarnishing process which produces the antique look of the product. Again the brass finish is unlacquered and will contiunue to age gracefully with the patina becoming darker with time. Cast from solid,high quality brass to produce a real quality product.

Iron Finish (Internal or External Use)

The products in the Iron Finish show off the natural beauty and textrue of the metal, they are protected from the weather and high moisture environments by a clear powder coating process which also gives it it's colour. This finish provides an attractive, durable and corrosion resistant coating which will last for many years.

Natural - Textured Finish (Internal Use Only)

A natural cast iron, finished with a clear matt lacquer which produces a beautifully textured look and feel. These products are only intended for internal use or when used in a protected area like an enclosed porch.

A natural finish which has been cast and polished to a very smooth, tactile finish. Covered in a matt lacquer to provide a protective coating. This finish ois recommended for internal use only.

Black Finish (Internal or External Use)

This finish provides an attractive, durable and corrosion resistant coating which will last for many years. It is an extremely low maintenance option for interior and exterior ironmongery applications and also resists moisture for use in bathroom and damp conditions. If used externally the mechanical components will require the occasional oiling. The black finish is first treated with a zinc plate to stop corrosion and then powder coated.

Rosewood (Internal or External Use)

The Wenlock Rosewood products are strong and heavy with a richly hued reddish colour and much darker veining in the wood. They can be polished or waxed to maintain the vibrance of the colour and to give overall protection in use. Ebony (Internal or External Use)

The Ebony finish on our products have a rich, dark look and feel for a very distinctive, quality period look. It has a very high density and fine texture which gives a very smooth finish. Launched by Carlisle Brass in September 2011 these new Natural Slate Door Knobs are the latest designs from Carlisle Brass.

Based in Cumbria, Carlisle Brass have stayed local for their inspiration on these designs and sourced the slate from the heart of the English Lake District in Cumbria. Each piece is hand made using a unique finishing and polishing process and means that each knob has it's own signature pattern.

There are currently two different designs available; The Natural Slate Ball Door Knob and the Natural Slate Mushroom Door Knob. They are mounted to the high quality Carlisle Brass 'Ice Range' of Roses in either Polished Chrome or Satin Chrome.

Carlisle Brass, the UK's leading manufacturer of door hardware, has introduced two new designs of door knocker to it's ever expanding range of door furniture.

The M43 Door Knocker On Rose is beautifully crafted from Solid Brass. The simple, sleek design is available in a range of 4 different finishes to suit your decor; Polished Brass, Florentine Bronze, Polished and Satin Chrome.

The slim knocker is mounted on a 42mm Rose with a matching separate rose to act as the strike plate for the door knocker. Overall length is 140mm with the fixing centres for the bolts at 95mm apart.

The M46 Door Knocker On Plate uses the same high quality Solid Brass design but here it is fitted to a slim Backplate. The Backplate measures 135mm x 39mm with the same fixing centres at 95mm.

Frelan Digital Door Viewer - Fitting Instructions

Fitting Instructions

Replace the existing door viewer or drill a 14mm hole in the door at eye level. Insert the camera from the outside while inserting the washer between the back of the lens and the door. Make sure that the arrow mark on front of the camera points upwards.

Fit the holding plate over the end of the lens then screw the locking barrel on to the threaded part of the camera and tighten, this will hold the plate to the door. You can then secure the plate with 2 or 3 screws (provided). Make sure that the arrow on the plate points upwards.

The wire of camera should be connected to the socket in the back of the digital door viewer,excess wire should be attached behind the small hook.

Hook the digital door viewer over the bracket at the top of the locking plate and secure with two small bolts through the holes in the bottom of the digital door viewer case.

Operation

•Press and release the power button, then the unit will continue working for the next 10 seconds.

•Light Indicator: If the light indicator turns on, please replace the batteries.

Safety measures

•Cleaning – Before cleaning, turn off the VCR. Do not use detergents or abrasives. Use a dry cloth.

•Water and moisture – Do not use any of this equipment in outdoor areas (except the outside of the sensor). Do not use the device in the presence of explosive or flammable fumes.

The choice between door knobs and lever door handles is one that is very personal. Door knobs may be unobtrusive but they can also be difficult to grip and in many circumstances a lever door handle provides a much greater sense of occasion.
Door handles are available either on a backplate or a rose. Roses are much smaller and more subtle. On a modern door a rose can be ideal as they often conceal the fitting screws.

Finesse Design will announce in the next few weeks a new design of multi point lock handle in their stunning Pewter range of door handles.

More Handles are really impressed with the new designs from Finesse, extending their award winning Pewter Door Handle designs onto a new narrow plate multi-point lock handle. The design uses a 92mm Lock Centre measurement with unsprung levers allowing the handle to pushed up to engage the lock system.

Finesse Pewter will have 3 different variations of plate available;

Standard - with keyholes to inside and outside,

Secure - with keyhole to the inside only and plain plate to the outside,

Plain - with no keyhole on the plate at all.

This new range of rustic door furniture is ideal for those looking for an authentic hand-forged period look for their home. The real benefit of this range is the variety of finishes that it is possible to acheive. More Handles have sourced the products in their basic untreated state, where the metal has been forged into shape, but not given any particular finish or patina.

The untreated metal very quickly achieves a natural surface rust which is how we then supply most of the products.

Choose Your Own Finish - The beauty of the product is that the customer can then choose what sort of finish they would like to acheive;

Natural Rust Finish
For many the untreated surface rust is ideal for matching in with existing fittings, or to help achieve a really aged and antique look to a door or piece of furniture. No further treatment is required.

Beeswax Finish
A coat of Natural Beeswax applied directly to the rust finish seals the rust colour and provides a dark matt bronze style of finish. The beeswax can be reapplied to suit.

Steel / Pewter Effect
Removing the surface rust with wire wool or equivalent, reveals the base metal and provides a distressed pewter / steel finish. This finish looks very elegant and does not require any maintenance on internal fittings, however it could be treated with a beeswax finish if desired. It is not recommended for external applications as the surface rust will return.

Black Graphite Finish
Treating the bare rust finish with a black graphite paste - such as Liberon Iron Paste - provides an excellent traditional black antique finish. It can be buffed to a high shine as required and completely covers and inhibits any further rust.

More Handles have had a great week exhibiting at the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC Birmingham.

Thanks to all who visited the Stand, it was great to see so many interesting projects under way. We saw a large cross-section of customers from those who bought direct from us at the show through to customers who are still applying for planning permission! Well we're at the other end of the project - but we still had some useful advice to give.

How To Measure A Euro Profile Cylinder Lock

Cylinder Locks are easy to fit and replace, however you do need to have the right size for your door. Here we show you how to measure the size of the Cylinder for your door.

1 - Open the door and view from the edge of the door at lock level.

2 - Locate the Securing Bolt on the edge of the door at the exact height of the Cylinder Lock.

3 - Measure from the centre of the Securing Bolt to the outer edge of the handle backplate on the outside of the door.

4 - Now measure from the centre of the Securing Bolt to the outer edge of the handle backplate on the inside of the door.

These measurements may be identical, in which case you need to choose a Standard Double Cylinder. If the Outside and Inside measurements are not identical you will need to specify an Offset Double Cylinder. (Ensure you specify carefully which measurement is Inside and which is Outside when choosing an Offset Cylinder with Turn.)

We recommend that your Cylinder does not protrude through the door handle plate by any more than 5mm for added security.

How To Fit A Euro Profile Cylinder Lock

Cylinder Locks are easy to fit or replace. Here we show you how to fit a Euro Profile Cylinder Lock.
.
1 - Open the door and view from the edge of the door at lock level.

2 - Locate the Securing Bolt on the edge of the door at the exact height of the Cylinder Lock. This bolt holds the Cylinder in place inside the lock case.

3 - Using a screwdriver simply unscrew the bolt and keep in a safe place. The Cylinder is now free in the lock case but may not be loose as the Cylinder operating catch may be engaged and holding it in place.

4 - Using the key turn the lock slightly to the left or right, pulling gently on the cylinder until you feel it loosen. Turning the key will have released the operating catch from the lock case and left it flush inside the Cylinder.

5 - You should now be able to easily pull the loose Cylinder out of the door.

To fit a new Cylinder simply follow these instructions in reverse, taking care to ensure the Securing Bolt gets a solid fix and is not cross threaded.

KTD - Keyed To Differ

MK - Master Keyed System

GMK - Grand Master Key System
Any number of Cylinders each with an Individual Key pattern, a single Master Key opens a defined group of Cylinders but not other defined groups. A Grand Master Key opens all Cylinder in all groups.

CK Construction Key
The Construction key is used during installation, allowing workmen full access to all areas. The main key is then used to recode the Cylinder and to automatically exclude the Construction Key.

Beeswax finish

All products with this finish are treated with a special wax imparting subtle matt richness to the metal. This gives excellent protection where products are fitted internally and maintained. Sometimes because of temperature changes your product might have a slight white bloom. We recommend you polish it with a soft cloth, this will restore the finish. However, mild steel or malleable iron, which are the two materials we forge, when fitted in damp bathrooms or wet properties, have the potential to exhibit surface rust. In these situations we recommend an application of maintenance wax. Please make sure plaster is fully dry before fitting ironmongery.

The maintenance wax will restore the finish and afford protection. If surface rust does occur rub with wire wool and apply maintenance wax with a rag or brush. Inevitably when two areas of metal come into contact an abrasive action occurs, and sooner or later the wax surfaces are lost by the constant rubbing action. This is unavoidable during the operational activity of the article, so where obvious abrasive areas of moving parts are visible an occasional light oiling is recommended.

Traditional black finish

There are many general advantages to using the powder coating process over conventional paints. For instance it contains no solvents so is kinder to the environment, overspray can be reused, it doesn’t run and it provides a tougher coating. Powder coating provides an attractive and durable corrosion resistant finish. Our traditional black finish can last for a good 15 – 20 years so it’s an excellent low maintenance option for exterior ironmongery applications.

Pewter patina finish

Pewter Patina is elegant and beautifully highlights the texture of the steel. Stylish and modern, it is equally suited to a new home as well as a period one. It has excellent anti-corrosion properties. Externally this finish requires no more than an occasional cleaning with a damp cloth. If you want a maintenance free finish combined with a superb natural metal colour then pewter patina is ideal.

Bronze finish

Our rustic Bronze Finish is a steel product beautifully handforged and then coated with a permanent bronze ﬁnish. It is not like other ﬁnishes on the market which are usually oil rubbed bronze versions, which are less weatherproof. The permanent ﬁnish will not wear and requires very little maintenance and it has excellent anti-corrosion properties. Externally this ﬁnish requires no more than an occasional cleaning with a damp cloth. This ﬁnish blends in well with most timber types and won’t look out of place on a historic building, a stately home or a contemporary apartment.

Installation of From The Anvil Oak Box Lock

Position lock block on edge of door with suitable knob height (approx 1 meter).Please ensure the keyhole is lower than the spindle hole.
Select position of decorative over-bars, mark box so you can drill and countersink four holes under the bar area.
Fix block to door using screws provided (check lenght is suitable for board thickness).
If you are sure the lock box is in correct position, proceed to drill latch and keyhole through door.
Alter latch direction if required as per manufacturer's instructions (see overleaf).
Insert lock into box, fit handles and escutcheons (check all operations work corectly).
Fix keep box to frame as before, Position, Drill, Screw, Fix Decorative over bars, and Insert lock keep.
Shut door and test all operations.
Stand back and enjoy.

How to fit a suffolk latch?

The traditional height for fitting the thumb latch is about 1300mm from floor.
Drill a row vertically of No 6mm holes one above the other tp make (with use of chisel) a narrow slot for the thumb bar to go through the door, about 90mm back from the shutting edge.
Fix the handle onto door using one screw only in top & bottom, fix so that the thumb bar going through door is level.
Position latch bar on other side so that the lower edge of bar rests on top of thumb bar & hangs over the edge of door by about 30mm. Put screw in central hole leaving loose enough for bar to move up & drop down freely. ( Check that when pressing down with thumb on handle side that thumb bar rises to lift latch bar).
Mark lines across face of frame to show position of frame keep. When bar is horizontal drill a guide hole into frame (3mm dia) just under this line to a depth of 25mm, about 15mm from inside edge of frame. With the door closed and latch bar going across frame the point of keep should enter hole, if you tap keep into frame stopping before it pinches latch bar.
If you push down on thumb latch or lift hooked end of thumb bar the latch bar should rise up out of keep.
We supply a staple pin which is driven through door & clenched over, or a simple screw in staple if you prefer. It needs to be fitted about 25mm back from edge of door over latch to keep bar against door.
If all parts work door opens & closes put remaining screws into handle.
Stand back & admire.

What exactly does Euro, Oval & Standard Profile mean anyway?

All I want to do is figure out which door handle to buy, and I have a bewildering choice of Standard Key Profile, Euro Key Profile, Oval Key profile and Lock Centre measurements - What are you talking about?!

It's true, there is nothing worse than industry jargon that means nothing to you as the customer. So here we have a quick and easy guide to de-bunk the jargon in the world of Key Profiles...

The term Key Profile refers to the shape of the keyhole cut into the backplate of a door handle, or key hole cover plate Escutcheon to use the correct jargon! (Pronounced es.cut.chun by the way). This is vitally important because depending on what type of locks you have fitted in your doors you will need to choose the correct profile to match.

Standard Key Profile - This is still the most common type of keyhole shape used in the UK. This is often described as a 'Chubb Key' and refers to the type of key with a long stem which is inserted through the door handle plate and into the lock case inside the door frame. When the key is turned it operates a number of levers inside the lock case and turns the bolt. The key hole shape or profile is much smaller than the other two variations as it only needs to accommodate the stem key.

Euro Key Profile - This is an over sized key hole shape that is designed to accommodate a Cylinder Lock rather than the key itself. The Cylinder passes through the door handle, or escutcheon, into the lock case inside the door and back out through the door handle on the other side of the door. These use a different style of Cylinder Key often described as a 'Yale Key'.

These are very common on commercial developments because of their flexibility in providing, suited locks, master-key, and emergency release capabilities. They are also now used more and more often in residential projects as customers become more aware of their benefits.

Oval Key Profile - Essentially doing the same job as the Euro Profile, this is (fairly obviously) a Cylinder with an Oval shape. This was the UK standard but has now been overtaken by the Euro Profile shape.

A word or two on Lock Centres;

The term Lock Centres applies to an all in one mortice latch and lock case, and relates to the distance between the centre of the hole for the Lever Spindle (the bar going through the door latch mechanism that joins the 2 handles together), and the centre of the round hole for the key stem.

Standard Profile Lock Centres - The UK standard for this measurement is always Lock Centres of 57.5mm.

Euro Profile Lock Centres - can vary as a few different standards apply, however the most common ones in use in the UK are Lock Centres at either 92mm, 70mm or 47.5mm. Some attention is required here when choosing your handles because buying a Euro Profile Handle won't necessarily mean you have chosen the right Lock Centres for your door.

Oval Profile Lock Centres - again variations do occur but the industry standard is 48.5mm.

A good retailer or Architectural Ironmonger should also be able to cut the correct centres into your chosen handle if it is not available off the shelf - so ask them if you can't see exactly what you need.

Which Units?

There are several big trends prevailing in contemporary kitchens, some of them contradicting each other. At one end you have high-gloss units, whilst at the other the more subtle matt-finish units are big news. The same goes for colour. Door Handles, Fixture and fittings, and other hardware don't have to match exactly, but they should blend together to make a harmonious space.

Replacing the door handles will cost anything from £10 upwards per door (I use Carlisle Brass for quality and price point). It's one of those details that needs to be done. Hinges need to match, too. That goes for the kitchen as well, if they show on the door.

Kerb appeal: 10 ways to improve the appearance of your property

First impressions make or break a deal. Sarah Beeny offers Telegraph readers 10 tips for adding instant impact to your home;

It doesn't work for books, but it does for houses – judging them by their façade I mean. A property's outer appearance, its kerb appeal, is often the deal maker (or breaker) when it comes to buying a home. It takes potential buyers no more than eight seconds to decide whether or not they like a house. During my recent hunt for a new flat I often found that a split second was long enough to write off a property; the flat approached via someone else's gnome-filled backyard, and the one up a fire escape with plaster peeling off the front of the building, for example.

At the other end of the scale, Sarah Beeny, the Property Ladder presenter, and her husband had decided to buy their house before they'd even reached the front door. "We were halfway across the garden and were already saying to each other, 'how do we make this house fit our family?'" she says. "It was May, and there were forget-me-nots everywhere. It was such an unusual plot to find in London."

But imagine if the garden was over run with brambles and there was rubbish blocking the pathway. "First impressions count for a lot," Beeny says. "A bad appearance can do a lot of damage. It doesn't take a great deal of effort to change this though."

Some houses have natural kerb appeal; the wisteria-clad Queen Anne rectory with a tree-lined drive, for example, will attract potential buyers even if it's a little dilapidated. "For the best country houses, the setting is the kerb appeal," says Crispin Holborow of Savills estate agency.

But on the whole, kerb appeal is more than just a good-looking house – even the ugliest house can have it.

"A house with real kerb appeal lifts your spirit – it's a house where the front garden is well-presented, the railing is in perfect condition, the door immaculately painted, perhaps with roses growing over it," says Lindsey Cuthill of Savills.

Unfortunately, improving the kerb appeal of a house is unlikely to add much to its value. "But if you can get someone in a positive frame of mind before they've stepped through the front door it can help sell to it," Beeny says. She has recently set up tepilo.com, a home-selling website, and has been advising vendors how to present their properties. So far, more than 10 properties have sold. "Buyers look for evidence that the house has been well maintained. Any sign that they will need to spend time or money may put them off," she says. Rotten window frames and cracked plasterwork, for example, present an obvious bartering tool.

Improving the appearance of a property doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive project, she says – but there are a few rules. "No DIY is better than bad DIY," she says. "Badly painted front doors with drips running down them or dirty looking houses are a no-no. A lack of cleanliness can be very off-putting."

1. Paint your front door. It sounds simple but this is the first thing that people are going to look at. "Go wild with colour, it's the one place you can," says Sarah Beeny, whose favourite door colour is currently cerise pink. Strong, bright colours in full gloss are popular at the moment but if you haven't got the nerve, black is always a safe bet, or a flat, dark plum colour such as "Pelt", by Farrow & Ball, says Tacina Smith of interiors shop Smiths of Kensal Green . For a contemporary look, matt, muted and washed-out colours are favoured in smart London streets.

2. Invest in quality door furniture. "Spend an extra £100 to get really good things," Beeny says. "Cheap generally looks cheap." Try to choose furniture in keeping with your property; heavy Victoriana door knockers and letter boxes will look ridiculous unless your home is Victorian. For a more contemporary look go for brushed aluminium or chrome. MORE HANDLES has a huge range to choose from. Avoid tune-playing door bells.

3. Lighting is vital, placed either side of the front door to add symmetry, or a lantern in a portico entrance, says Alex Michelin, of swanky London developers Finchatton. Don't be afraid to try out lights in situ before you commit; if they're too big or too ornate they can look brash. If your property is approached via a garden, light it sensitively. "Good garden lighting is unseen," Beeny says. Hide lights in the trees or conceal them in the garden path or drive. Carolyn Trevor, an interior designer who has a long list of celebrity clients, recommends Charles Edwards for wall lanterns and lights (www.charlesedwards.com ) or Phillips and Wood (www.phillipsandwood.co.uk )

4. The approach to the front door (steps, a path and/or a driveway), should be swept of leaves, and free from rubbish. Cars, bicycles, horse boxes must be neatly parked. Alex Michelin recommends marble, sandstone or Portland stone for steps and paths, and newly painted railings. Porches can give an air of distinction but can become dumping grounds for clutter. "They can be awful if they are stuck on as an afterthought – they must be in proportion," says Crispin Holborow of Savills.

5. Numbering or naming a house can easily go wrong. Wonky numerals, badly painted names, or plaques with pictures (such as birds, trees) do no justice to the front of a house. For houses with fanlights, Carolyn Trevor suggests the number or name is acid-etched into the glass. Or for an affordable alternative, Tacina Smith recommends number stickers from http://www.simplystick.co.uk/. Holborow would steer away from putting a name plaque on a country house. "If they don't know where you live you don't want them there," he says. For those who insist, names can be wrought into gateways, or inscribed tastefully on brass or slate, and screwed to the gate post or porch.

6. Windows look sad when they are dirty, so make sure yours are cleaned regularly. Rotten window frames are also unacceptable and if you're putting in new ones, make sure they are appropriate with the design of the rest of the house. "The position of the glazing bars is massively important," Beeny says. "And don't feel you have to paint them white. They look great in lots of different colours from stone to dark green to black." Bear in mind the colour of the brick/stone work before choosing a colour though. Finally, all curtain linings and blinds should match when seen from the street or driveway (try www.theblindscompany.co.uk or www.eclectic-interiors.com )

7. However small the space is, add some greenery. "You don't need a big garden to plant a creeper, and houses look beautiful with plants trailing up them," Beeny says. "And you can easily make window boxes yourself. Just paint a plastic planter and plant it with some draping ivy." Landscaped beds with colourful planting and box hedges set off the front of a house; or for smaller spaces, such as either side of the front door, planters with box topiary. Remember though that some creepers are not good for brickwork as they can pull the mortar out of the pointing.

8. An impressive entrance gate is a "must have" for a country house, Holborow says. But entrances should reflect the period of the house; wrought iron electric gates are in keeping with a new-build home, while a white-painted gate with simple stone pillars is better suited to a manor. Carved owls and eagles should really only adorn the entrance pillars to stately homes and castles.

9. Spruce up a tired façade by repainting, re-pointing, or rendering over ugly brickwork. Don't go too crazy: paint colours should be more sensible than on the front door, and in keeping with the period of the house (and the ones either side, if you live on a street). This doesn't mean to say that they have to be the same colour (unless you are in a heritage area).

10. Don't let the house next door ruin your kerb appeal. If your neighbours have rubbish outside their house, suggest you remove it, rather than whinging about it, Beeny says. "And if you're trimming your hedge, ask if you can do theirs while you're at it – 10 minutes mowing, or rubbish collecting is worth the effort." Try to conceal their rubbish bins (and yours) behind a hedge or a small fence. If you have to have them on show, make sure they are clean and the lids are on.
